Delhi, capital city of the Federal Republic of India, is one of India's fastest growing cities. Delhi blends an historic past and a vibrant present. Delhi has some of the finest museums in the country. Legend has it that the Pandavas, the august heroes of the epic Mahabharata, originally founded Delhi, then called Indraprastha, around 1200 B.C. Present day Delhi is built around the ruins of seven ancient cities. Many dynasties ruled from here and the city is rich in the architecture of its monuments. Diverse cultural elements absorbed into the daily life of city have enriched its character.
Today, the city is a curious blend of the modern and traditional, skyscrapers, beautiful gardens and wide tree-lined avenues perpetuate the Mughal passion of landscaping and architectural excellence
Delhi is the second most widely used entry point into the country, being on the route of most major airlines. The city’s on the move and the pace is picking up. With 2010 Commonwealth Games in sight, Delhi has started sprucing itself like rarely before.
Connaught Place, Delhi ’s main commercial hub, is horseshoe shaped British-built complex characterizes the frenetic pace of Delhi life. It remains a popular place for wining and dining. Besides Connaught Place, South Delhi is another important commercial part of the city, comprising South Extension, Greater Kailash & Delhi Haat.
Delhi’s craving for food, it seems is insatiable – restaurants and eateries just keep multiplying every year. Dining at a fancy place will obviously be satisfying but to get the taste of authentic Indian food, try out some restaurants in Jama Masjid in Old Delhi area or at Pandara Road near India Gate.
Delhi, a canvas that reflects the complexities, contradictions, beauty and dynamism of a city where the past co-exist with the present. More important, however, Delhi blends within its folds the great cultural variety of India; an unceasing range of activity, a million ways of saying………
